Note on Husband: Samuel RAY

Rev. Samuel Ray was the son of George Ray and Cathryn Savage. Samuel married Rachel Evans in 1797, Wilkes Georgia. Samuel was a Baptist Minister.

Samuel moved to the State of North Carolina when he was quite young, from there to Georgia, Clark County, where he sought and obtained the Pearl of great price, which proved to be in him a well of water springing up to everlasting life. He united with the Baptist Church of Christ at Trail Creek in 1807, was baptized by Elder Isah Hale (Isiah Haile) was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in 1812. After having labored for some years in different portions of the State of Georgia, he moved to Montgomery County, Alabama, where he labored for probably 2 or 3 years, in the vast spiritual wilderness that then spread before the man of God. He then moved to Chilton County, Alabama where he resided up to his death and where the writer has had an opportunity of hearing much said of his labors of love at an earlly period in this County.

Through infirmities he has not preached for some years, yet his former labors are not forgotten by the people, but he is spoken of as having been one of the most laborious and useful ministers that has ever labored in this County. Though poor, his labors were abundant. As to his standing among the brethern, and the ground he occupied on the subject of missions, we can learn by referring to Holcomb's "History of the Baptist of Alabama", as we find there on page 123, in 1822, he was appointed by the Alabama Association Colleagues with brother James McLemore to visit all the churches and preach to the destitute.

I call attention to this point because some have doubled if he was for or against missionary efforts. During his last years he took no active part in these things. The writer became personally acquainted with Father Ray in the first of 1854, attended the church where his membership was, and through he was very old and infirm, I think he was present at all his conference meetings, faithfully filling his Seat at the House of God.

Samuel was perfectly in his right mind to the last moments. He was calm and peaceful - fell asleep in the arms of his dear Redeemer, without a struggle or a groan. Well one might say, "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last be like this. By request, I exect, God being willing, to preach his funeral at Chestnut Creek on the 4th Sabbath in March next B.B. Smith.
