LOWVILLE – Kathleen LaJune Zehr, 94, of Hummingbird Lane, died Tuesday afternoon at Lewis County Residential Healthcare Facility.

 

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at First Mennonite Church, New Bremen with Bruce Chartrand, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be held privately in First Mennonite Church Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, May 21, 2012 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

 

She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Zehr of Lowville; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Zehr of Croghan; a niece and her husband, Mary and Andy Grau of Castorland; four nephews and their wives, Ben and Patricia Zehr of Indianapolis, IN; Mark and Debra Zehr of Greeley CO; Vaughn Zehr of Croghan; Jan Zehr of Croghan; nine grand nieces and nephews; eleven great-grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Mark J. Zehr.

 

Miss Zehr was born on December 26, 1917 at home in Croghan, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Susianna Lehman Zehr. She graduated from Goshen College with a Bachelor's Degree in 1940, and earned her Master's Degree from Columbia University in 1941. Miss Zehr worked for three years at Morris High School teaching Home Economics before teaching at Carthage Central School. In 1950, she went to Beirut, Lebanon to teach Home Economics at the Beirut College for Women for one year. Upon her return to the United States, Miss Zehr went back to work for Carthage Central School until her retirement.

 

Miss Zehr was a life-long member of First Mennonite Church, New Bremen, where she was active in teaching Sunday school. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Watertown, NY, and was a former President of the Constable Hall Association. For many years, she was a member of the Traveling Club of Carthage and was also a member of the former Civic Club in Lowville. Kathleen was instrumental in helping form the Hospice program in Lewis County. She was on the original planning committee of Brookside Senior Living Community.

 

Miss Zehr enjoyed knitting, crocheting, fine arts and china painting. She enjoyed traveling, reading and gardening.
