Aged Couple Die in Week’s Time
Death came within a week to an elderly couple, both natives of Croghan, found in their locked home at Watertown Saturday. Jacob C. Zehr, 88, had been dead about six days when his son Gilbert of Bayville, N.J. arrived on a visit and had to force entry into the house. The wife, Mrs. Mary Radel Zehr, about 80, was unconscious on the floor of the kitchen. She died Monday in Mercy Hospital.
Authorities said Mr. Zehr had apparently died of a heart attack and his body fell to the bedroom floor. It is believed Mrs. Zehr collapsed when she made the discovery, fell and struck her head on the stove, and lay unconscious for days until her plight was discovered.
Mr. Zehr was born at Croghan, Oct, 18, 1870, a son of Jacob and Lena Moser Zehr. Mrs. Zehr also was born at Croghan, attended schools there. The couple was married in 1889 and went to Watertown to reside. Both were members of the Conservative Mennonite Church, Croghan.
The son, Gilbert, is the only survivor in the immediate family. The couple also leaves two grandchildrem Paul G. Zehr, Belleville, N.J. and Miss Roberta Zehr, Lowville, and a great granddaughter.
