Note on Wife: Joanna CHRISTOPHERS

Joanna Christophers was the youngest daughter of Judge Richard Christophers of New London and his second wife Grace TURNER. She was born on 19 Mar 1706/1707 at New London, New London Co., Connecticut. She was baptized on 23 Mar 1706-7 at New London.

 

Grace TURNER was a daughter of John TURNER and Mary BREWSTER of Scituate, and granddaughter of Jonathan BREWSTER and Lucretia OLDHAM, and great granddaughter of Elder William Brewster and his wife Mary UNKNOWN of Mayflower. [Jonathan's wife Lucretia Oldham Brewster sailed on Mayflower while Jonathan Brewster sailed on ship Little Anne and arrived a year later on 10 Nov 1621.]

 

 

Joanna CHRISTOPHERS married Benajah LEFFINGWELL on 24 Aug 1726 at Norwich, New London Co., CT. They had eight sons and five daughters. All born and baptized in Norwich.

He was a mariner trading between New London and West Indies. He is not known to have married.

Joanna was 50 when Benajah died in 1756. Per marriage record, "Joannah Leffingwell" remarried to "Col. John Dyar"as his 2nd wife, on 4 Oct 1759 in Canterbury, Windham Co., Connecticut. He was the son of Joseph DYAR/DYER (6 Nov 1653-12 Oct 1704) and his 2nd wife Hannah BAXTER (b. d. 19 Sep 1726). (Note: Hannah Baxter was shown as Hanna Baxter, daughter of John & Anna born 3 mo. 6. 1660).

 

Joanna was widowed in 1779 at age 73. She returned to Norwich to live among her children. She died in 1784 in Norwich at age 78.

 

Joanna is buried at Norwichtown, next to her first husband.

 

The gravestone of Joanna Christophers, in Norwich, is thus inscribed:

"Joanna Dyar, relict of Col. John Dyar,

formerly wife of Mr. Benajah Leffingwell and daughter of Hon. Richard Christophers, Esq."
