John Bushenell, Husbandman, of Tilehurst, co. Berks, d. aft. 20 Oct. 1585, wife Alice ( ). By his will, dated 20 Oct. 1585, (or 1545) no prob, or inv., he desired to be bur. in the ch. yd. of S. Michaels, Tilehurst, and gave to that ch. 6s, 8d, and 12d. for a Pax, and made bequests of 40s. to each of his sons, William, John, Richard, and Nicholas; and to his daus. Agnes and Margaret. (Rec. Dandridge 90.) Resid. Leg. and Exec. his wife, Alice, Overseer; Nicholas Whette (perhaps Wheate or Whitte), Wit.: Richard Curtes, John Curtes, and John Blakeman, In Phillimore's Index, this will was dated 1545 but our copyist, Miss E. Stokes first read the date as 1585, and when her attention was called to the discrepancy, made a check and reported, "That not expecting to find the old character, used as a 4 in a document of this date, she had read it as an 8." We are inclined to believe her first reading was correct, from the fact that he is named in his father's will, implying that he was living in 1564, the date of the will).
