LOWVILLE- Mary Christina Swartzentruber, 94, of East Road, Lowville died late Wednesday evening at the Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville.
Mary was born at home in the Town of Harrisburg, on December 25, 1914, a daughter of Edward E. and Rosella Zehr Yancey and attended county school in Harrisburg. She did domestic work at home until her marriage. On June 15, 1938, she married Abner M. Swartzentruber at Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Christopher Nafziger officiating. Together with her husband, the couple took over the family farm and owned and operated the dairy farm until 1966. In 1966, she went to work for Lewis County General Hospital until retiring in 1986, retiring as dietary supervisor. Mr. Swartzentruber died in November, 2002.
She was a member of Lowville Mennonite Church and the church's Faithful Workers Sewing Circle. Mary enjoyed making quilts & sewing, gardening & freezing produce, making soap, making elaborate dinners for her family, and caning chairs.
She is survived by three children; a daughter-in-law; two brothers; three sisters; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a son, Glenn A. Swartzentruber, who died in March, 1998; a sister, Edna Zehr, a sister-in-law, Bertha Yancey, two brothers-in-law, Morris and Edward Roes.
