LOWVILLE- Clayton W. Yousey, 87, of Cardinal Lane, Lowville died Friday morning, September 11, 2009 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where he had resided for the past two months.

 

Clayton was born in Lowville, NY, on November 17, 1921, a son of Jacob and Anna Widrick Yousey, and graduated from Lowville Academy in 1938. For three and one-half years in the 1940’s, he served the government by fighting forest fires in California, and did maintenance in national parks in Virginia and Maryland. On June 5, 1946, he married Iva R. Yancey at Lowville Mennonite Church, with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Clayton was employed by Climax Manufacturing Company for 46 years, retiring as a printing foreman in June 1985. After retirement, Clayton and his son Terry set-up a maple sugar operation which they ran together until it was completely destroyed by the microburst in 1995.

 

Clayton was a member of Lowville Mennonite Church, and later a Charter Member of Naumburg Mennonite Church, where he served on several church committees including, Financial Advisors, Trustees, and Building Expansion Committee. He also taught Sunday School for several years. He served for over 25 years on the Board of Directors for the NY Mennonite Mutual Aid Plan and participated in the Association of Mutual Aid Societies. He was actively involved as a member of the Adirondack Mennonite Camping Association (Beaver Camp). In addition, he enjoyed working at the Agape Shop in Watertown for many years.

 

Clayton’s hobbies included caning and repairing antique furniture, traveling, camping, fishing, and enjoying time with his family.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Iva, four sons and their wives; five grandchildren; twin great-granddaughters; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by a sister, Clara Moshier, and two daughter-in-laws who were married to his son LaVerne, Clarajean and Esther Yousey.

Iva Rose Yousey, 92, of Meadowbrook Terrace, Carthage, formerly of Brookside Senior Living Community, Lowville, went to be with her Lord on Saturday morning, November 15, 2014 at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville.

 

Iva was born in the Town of Harrisburg, NY, on December 8, 1921, a daughter of the late Edward E. and Rose Zehr Yancey and attended District # 8 School and Lowville Academy. She later took several night courses at B.O.C.E.S. On June 5, 1946, she married Clayton Yousey at Lowville Mennonite Church, with Rev. Lloyd Boshart officiating. Clayton died on September 11, 2009. Iva was a homemaker and for 30 years, she had a small business in her home “Ye Ole Hobbie Shoppe”.

 

Iva was a former member of Lowville Mennonite Church and later a Charter Member of Naumburg Mennonite Church, where she was active in teaching Bible and Sunday school, “Faithful Workers” and “Ladies Aid Sewing Circle”. She was actively involved in the Adirondack Mennonite Camping Association (Beaver Camp). She volunteered at the Lewis County General Hospital Gift Shop. She was also active in the Agape Shoppe in Watertown and volunteered several weeks for Ten Thousand Villages at Mennonite Central Committee, Akron, PA. She was also a member of Beaver River Senior Citizens and the Lewis County General Hospital Auxiliary.

 

Iva enjoyed camping, sewing, quilting, gardening and traveling to spend time with family and friends. She also enjoyed working with furniture and antiques.

 

She is survived by four sons and their wives; five grandchildren; two sisters; a sister-in-law; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by two brothers, Edward C. and Gerald Yancey; two sisters, Edna Zehr and Mary Swartzentruber.
